GM to add or keep 7000 jobs, make US$1B factory investment

General Motors is expected to announce Tuesday it will be investing at least $1 billion in its US plants.

The company made the announcement Tuesday morning, just weeks after President-elect Donald Trump threatened the automaker with a "big border tax" if it continued to produce its popular Chevrolet Cruze model in Mexico. Stay with 8News online and on air for the latest updates.

However, GM has also been planning to lay off about 3,300 employees at three plants in OH and MI within the next few months, according to Reuters.

General Motors (GM) on Tuesday announced its plan to invest $1 billion in U.S. factories and to create or retain 7,000 jobs in the next few years, the Associated Press reports.

-Amidst criticism from President-elect Donald Trump on moving jobs to Mexico, US carmakers have been busy making job announcements.

Earlier Tuesday, Wal-Mart said it would add 10,000 this year. That's where GM announced in 2015 it would 300 new jobs and expand production in an unused portion of the sprawling factory. Overall, those have resulted in the addition or retention of of 25,000 American jobs, including 6,000 in the manufacturing sector. That announcement came on the same day GM said it would invest $900 million at three USA plants.

"When automakers such as Toyota announced their new strategies in response to the so-called Trump risk, the industry was nervous and asked 'Who's next?'", said Kim Jin-woo, an analyst at Korea Investment & Securities Seoul.

In all, the Detroit automaker said it will create or keep 7,000 jobs in the next few years, including about 2,000 at its factories. This strategy has resulted 25,000 new jobs in the USA -about 19,000 engineering, IT, and professional jobs and 6,000 hourly manufacturing jobs, GM says. Those plants south of the border were handled by a separate supplier, GM made sure to note today, meaning they were not direct franchise establishments belonging to the automaker.

A recent Quinnipiac University survey found just 37 percent of voters approved of the way Trump's handling his job. USA presidents usually hit some of their highest approval numbers between their win and their inauguration.

GM said it had added about 6000 USA jobs, consisting of 4000 hourly and 2000 salaried positions, since the end of 2015 for a total American workforce of 103,000.

General Motors has confirmed an additional $1 billion in USA factory investments, part of a broader plan that promises to expand its domestic workforce by 7,000 employees.

Since the election, several automakers have said they are investing to expand their United States plants.

The nation's largest automaker will invest in domestic plants over the course of the year and add or retain 1,500 workers, according to a statement.
