Judge grants emergency stay to allow people to temporarily remain in US

The federal judge whose emergency order temporarily barred the US from deporting people from nations subject to President Donald Trump's travel ban is a University of MI graduate.

Within hours of the order, immigrants had been detained at airports around the United States.

The group believes between 100 and 200 people have been detained at U.S. airports or in transit.

Trump, who took office just over a week ago, had promised during his campaign what he called "extreme vetting" to do more to protect Americans from terror attacks. A few minutes later, in the Eastern District of Virginia, Judge Leonie Brinkema issued a temporary restraining order giving all permanent legal residents detained at Dulles Airport access to lawyers, and blocking the petitioners from being removed. And very early this morning in the Western District of Washington, U.S. District Judge Thomas Zilly issued another order stopping any deportations.

"We've gotten reports of people being detained all over the country", said Becca Heller, director of the International Refugee Assistance Project. The groups also brought an emergency request "to prevent the imminent repatriation of dozens and dozens of refugees, visa-holders, and other individuals from nations subject to the January 27 executive order". The order halts efforts to deport refugees and visa holders from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. The two men had already been approved for visas prior to them arriving in the United States, in addition they were were granted refugee status due to their family's association with the United States military.
