12 killed in Bali landslides, villagers warned torrential rains may trigger floods

Twelve people, including two children, were killed in a landslide on the Indonesian island of Bali.

One family lost a 33-year-old woman, her seven-year-old daughter and one-year-old son.

The agency said in a statement that the landslide in Bangli district was caused by sustained torrential rains. Another 10-year-old died in another nearby village.

The national weather agency said heavy rain would continue in Bali on Saturday and Sunday.

"All victims have been evacuated and the injured have been taken to hospital", said an agency official in Bali, Indra Kalak.

"Landslides happen nearly every year in Bali and cost lives", Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesperson for the National Disaster Management Agency, said in a statement.

Heavy downpours were blamed for the disaster in Bulurejo village of Karanganyar district, Risky A, senior official at the provincial disaster management agency said.

Bali is a popular tourist spot, and is home to more than 4 million people.

Landslides are common in Indonesia.
