Betsy DeVos is a cynical choice for education secretary

After promising in a July radio interview to be an important part of a Senate that would act as a series of checks and balances on President Donald Trump, Rubio has since made a decision to vote in favor of every single one of Trump's billionaire and millionaire cabinet nominees, DeVos included.

DeVos's qualifications to serve as secretary of education are so weak that two Republican senators declined to vote for her.

As New York Times columnist Ross Douthat pointed out, liberals could logically explain going after any number of Trump's high-profile nominees, "But somehow it was DeVos who became, in the parlance of cable-news crawls, Trump's 'most controversial nominee'".

"As the chair of the Assembly Education Committee and as a parent of a public school student, I am concerned about Secretary DeVos's views on policies which I believe will negatively affect our public schools, teachers, parents and most importantly our wonderful students", state Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan (D-Astoria) said.

The market breadth is strong with 1180 strong advances and 660 declines, whereas 92 stocks remain unchanged on BSE. The BSE metal index took the biggest knock, down 1.25 per cent, followed by auto, oil and gas and healthcare.

DeVos did eventually get into the school through a different entrance and was able to meet with teachers' union officials and school leaders. "Her leadership and drive will deliver meaningful reforms and start a new chapter for all children - no matter race, socioeconomic status, or zip code - to have access to high-quality schools". The real solution is more complicated because it means we have to recognize the hard truth that not every American is given an equal opportunity before we can take steps to mend our educational system.

The San Diego Unified School District Board of Trustees is expected to approve a resolution Tuesday that would extend an invitation to Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos to visit city schools. Opposed by half the Senate, she faced criticism, even ridicule for lack of experience and confusion during her confirmation hearing.

The federal Department of Education is in major need of an overhaul - one that will reduce its ever growing bureaucracy, which only causes headaches for districts and isn't making a dent in academic performance. Conceptually, charter schools work to return equilibrium to the relationship between the individual and the state. It was a 51-50 vote, with Vice-President Mike Pence casting the tie-breaking vote.

Collins and Murkowski said they feared her focus on charter schools will undermine remote public schools in their states.

Thomas Cook is raising its prices this year, it will cost on average 9 per cent more to fly away on holiday this summer. Partly because of the prevailing high prices in Spain, bookings to Greece for summer 2017 are up by almost half.

Even so, given that DeVos has spent much of her life and a lot of her own money to improve education in America, she might have a thought or two about how to run a department created for that very goal.

DeVos, a MI billionaire philanthropist, is a national figure on the cause of giving vouchers to parents so they can choose whether to send their kids to private or public schools.

Between speakers, chants such as, "Whose, school?"

DeVos said in a statement that she respected peaceful protest but "I will not be deterred in executing the vital mission of the Department of Education".
