South Sudan is facing a starvation, the United Nations declared

The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the International Children's Fund (Unicef) and the World Food Programme (WFP) also called for urgent action as nearly 5 million people urgently needed food, agricultural and nutrition assistance, Xinhua news agency reported.

The World Food Programme (WFP), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and United Nations children's fund UNICEF had partly blamed the starvation in the northern region of Unity state on hindrances by the security agencies on humanitarian organizations.

"If sustained and adequate assistance is delivered urgently, the hunger situation can be improved in the coming months and further suffering mitigated", the agencies said in a report. The UN's official declaration of "famine" in South Sudan speaks of unprecedented magnitude of the crisis that is unfolding.

South Sudan on Monday declared a famine in northern Unity State while Fews Net, the famine early warning system, has said that some remote areas of northeast Nigeria are already affected by starvation since late past year.
