Trump's next pick for national security adviser turns down the offer

In a bid to appease his critics from within his own Republican Party, Mr Trump is expected to announce today (Fri) that he is appointing Mike Dubke as his White House Communications Director.

One source told Fox that retired Navy Vice Admiral Robert Harward "really wanted" to do the job, but ultimately decided that he could not. Under Flynn, the National Security Council was reportedly understaffed and dysfunctional, but it looked like Harward might bring some stability.

Now Harward has apparently said no to the offer, and Trump has asked him to return to the White House to see if his mind can be changed, according to FT's sources.

Harward is a friend of Secretary of Defense General James Mattis, and served as his deputy while Mattis led the US Central Command. This follows the resignation of Michael Flynn earlier in the week after allegations that he lied to Vice President Mike Pence over the details of his phone call with the Russian Ambassador to the US late a year ago.

Robert Harward, a retired vice admiral, has turned down his nomination as national security adviser (NSA) for Donald Trump, US President.

Kushner Family Says Jeffrey Loria Becoming Ambassador Would Halt Marlins Sale
Reports last week indicated that the Kushners, led by Jared's brother Joshua, had been in talks to buy the Marlins for months. Officials with the Marlins have not commented, and team president David Samson is expected to address the issue on Friday.

According to CBS and Reuters, Harward turned down the job because Harward had demanded his own team and the White House had resisted.

Priebus said the administration is working on healthcare, tax reform and other key agenda items, but over the past few days, stories have dominated cable news that were "totally fake".

There are two other names rumored to be front-runners: Retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg and retired Gen. David Petraeus.

Hours after Thursday's rambling press conference where Trump lamented the messy country he inherited, the Financial Times reported the president's top choice for National Security Adviser has withdrawn from consideration.

Harward's decision not to take the job leaves the White House scrambling to find a leader for the security council, which is struggling to get its bearings.

Harward's decision to turn down the offer will only add to the troubles Trump and his team have faced this week.
