Licking County unemployment makes annual January jump

Turlock had an unemployment rate of 8 percent in January, up from 7.4 percent posted in December. Farming had the third most job losses at an estimated 300 positions, followed by Manufacturing at 200 and Leisure and Hospitality, also with an estimated 200 job losses.

Paulding County experienced the largest jump in unemployment, from 4.3 percent in December 2016 to 5.7 percent in January, an increase of 1.4 percent.

The end of the Christmas season and annual lull in construction raised the unemployment rate in Hancock County and Ohio's other 87 counties in January. The job growth for the month in Educational and Health Services all came from industries in healthcare and social assistance, according to the EDD's data.

According to unemployment statistics compiled by the ODJFS, in cooperation with the U.S. Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the county's workforce decreased by 100 people in January, from 14,100 to 14,000, while those employed dropped by 200 people, from 13,500 to 13,300, and those unemployed rose by 100, from 600 to 700 people.

Unemployment rates in nine area counties increased an average of almost 1 percent in January, according to statistics released Tuesday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The highest rate in January in the last 17 years was 10.9 percent in 2010. Rates for counties have not yet been released for January.

The Washington state unemployment rate was 5.1 percent in January while the Seattle-area figure was 3.7 percent, both unchanged from a month prior.

Unemployment numbers in surrounding counties increased.

In January, Ohio's unemployment rate was unchanged at 5 percent and USA rate was 4.8 percent, up a tenth of a percentage point.
